Caring for Pets & Owners

We understand your pet’s health can affect the entire family. Our goal is to provide the highest quality of care in a comfortable, supportive environment. Since many dermatology patients require long-term follow-up care, a relationship built on good communication is important to us.

Diagnostic Testing

Our extraordinary team specializes in diagnosing veterinary skin conditions. Diagnostics include basic blood work, imaging techniques, and a vast array of specialized testing and advanced technology. Other diagnostic options include:

  • Serology allergy tests
  • Digital photographs
  • Fine needle aspirates
  • Acetate tape preparations
  • Flea combing
  • Food elimination diet
  • Fungal cultures and preparations
  • Intradermal allergy testing
  • Impression smears
  • Bacterial cultures for ear and skin
  • Ear cytology, myringotomy, and otoscopy
  • Skin scrapings, cytology, biopsies, and histology

We employ diagnostic trichograms for microscopic examination of the hair and root such as the use of the Wood’s Lamp, a UV light that exposes fungal infections and other diseases on the surface of the skin.

Pet Skin Conditions & Diseases

Our Red Bank Veterinary Hospitals dermatology & allergy specialists diagnose and treat a variety of pet skin conditions, including:

  • Acral lick dermatitis
  • Acute moist dermatitis (hot spots)
  • Alopecia (hair loss)
  • Auto-immune skin disease
  • Bacterial skin infections
  • Drug reactions
  • Ear disease
  • Ectoparasitic diseases (fleas, lice)
  • Endocrine/metabolic skin disease
  • Environmental allergies (atopy)
  • Flea allergy dermatitis
  • Food allergies
  • Fungal yeast skin infections
  • Genetic/congenital skin diseases

Treatment for a skin condition is tailored to each animal’s needs. Often, a combination of procedures is used to alleviate pain and heal the source of irritation in skin conditions. For example, we may prescribe medicated baths, ear flushes, and anal sac expression to relieve irritation, and nail trims to minimize damage from scratching.

Allergies in pets typically involve diagnostic tests, immunotherapy, and long-term planning for management of the offending allergens. Whatever your circumstances or challenges, our team is dedicated to extraordinary patient treatment with continuous, comprehensive support for pet owners.

WHAT IS A BOARD CERTIFIED VETERINARY DERMATOLOGIST?

Board certified veterinary dermatologists focus on diagnosis and management of allergies and diseases affecting skin, ears, feet, and hair coat. In addition to undergraduate training and four years of veterinary school, board certified dermatologists complete an internship and residency in their specialized field for an additional three to five years of training. This is followed by a rigorous examination from the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. Passing this examination grants the status of Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (DACVD).

Board certified dermatologists work together with primary care veterinarians and specialists to give pets a good quality of life.
